Music

Music is one of the key elements of the worship at St. John’s, with a choir of over 25 members, and a small acoustic instrumental group assisting with services on a regular basis – with their involvement likely to increase as a result of the work required on the organ in due course.

The choir is for anyone from the age of 7 upwards: there is no upper limit. You don’t need to be able to read music, although of course it does help, and you don’t have to be able to come every week.

Most of our members have work or family commitments that mean they’re not there every practice and service. The Choir sings at the weekly 10 am Eucharist service, and at special choral services scattered through the year at major festivals. In the summer, they sing at weddings, and on many occasions have taken part in the Festival Evensong at Chichester Cathedral, as well as Deanery events where a joint choir is put together for such services as Choral Evensong and recently a performance of Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’. Music ranges from the very formal to the highly informal.

The Choir has also headlined various concerts over the years, including a much enjoyed performance along with St John’s music group in “St John’s In-Spire-d Music for a Summer Evening” as part of St John’s 150th Anniversary. The Choir meets every Friday between 7.00 and 8.30pm, except in August, in the church hall, with a week off after Christmas and Easter.

To join the Music Group, you simply have to able to play a musical instrument!

Although, it does need to be an acoustic instrument as you will be playing alongside a piano, flute, three violins, a cello and double bass and a tuba! The music group usually plays at the Family or World masses at the start of each month, as well as occasional other services, with rehearsals sorted out as required. Anyone Grade IV standard or above is warmly welcomed.

The Music Group meets before the first Sunday 10.00 am service and get together for rehearsals at mutually convenient times before concerts.

If you’re interested in the choir, please come along any week or please address your email to attn. Rachel Staplehurstfor the Music Group please address your email to attn. Sigrid Moiseiwitsch.
